Cordless Blinds and Cordless Shades for Children's rooms
By Seth
8/31/2011 10:38:00 PM
In recent years the window treatment industry has been under scrutiny due to child safety concerns. I would suggest that the industry has responded strongly by developing innovative products without cords that are functional without sacrificing form. As a parent myself I would highly recommend taking a look at some of our cordless blinds and shades for your child's room(s) or windows that are easily accessable. While safety is a major concern, cordless blinds offer other benefits - they are quite simple to lift and lower and you don't clutter the space around your windows with unsightly cords.

My wife and I recently put a set of blackout cordless cellular shades in my 3-year-old daughter's room. They are wonderful insulators, and the blackout characteristics ensure our little rooster doesn't start cackling at first morning light.  My daughter likes the crinkles and that she can lift them herself. We also just launched a new smooth-lift solar shade that I am considering putting in our family room. The shade cuts-down the sun, looks fantastic and has an easy, smooth lift mechanism. There are plenty of other excellent options, cordless roman shades and even cordless mini blinds.

Just a few years ago cordless blinds were either not yet available or cost an arm and a leg. However, in current day, many of our products have a cordless upgrade option, and generally it is only a nominal upgrade fee, or no upgrade fee at all.

Please let us know if we can help you find the perfect cordless window treatment option for you and your family!

Safety is our Priority!
By Rondale
12/28/2009 3:43:00 PM

Are you looking to purchase new blinds but are concerned about the safety of "Little Jonnie" who loves to play with everything? Well, we at Payless Décor want to make sure that safety is a priority. Here are a couple of products I recommend that add a touch of style to your home décor while offering safety features that help keep your little ones safe.

Our cellular shades give a pleasing look to your home décor while offering the cordless option which will keep young children safe from hazardous situations. They come in a variety of styles and options from single and double cell construction to “Duofold” which gives you the “top down/bottom up” capability. Another bonus is that are cellular shades are designed from a durable 100% non-woven polyester fabric which insulates windows against cold air drafts. This saves you money through improved energy efficiency in the home.

Our roller shades are another product to consider being that “cordless” comes standard. They are so easy to use that a child can operate them. Simply give the shade a slight tug to open and pull them down to close. The spring mechanism will stop the shade at the length you specify. Our roller shades are also customizable with a number of options from decorative hem styles to the cassette system. The cassette system is a great option which covers the rolled up shade with a decorative valance.

Don’t stop short at just our cellular and roller shades. We keep safety in mind with all of our products by including cord cleats at no charge so you can safely tie the excess cord away from children. If you select the cord-loop or continuous cord options, you can request tensioners which will alleviate all slack in the cord. This works to help prevent children from getting tangled in the cord.

If you have any questions about our products, feel free to contact us so that we can help you choose the best option for your home décor needs.

By seth
12/17/2009 8:36:00 AM

Shade and Blind safety has been an important topic for the last 10 years. Within the Window Treatment industry, we strive to constantly make our product safer and offer more utility to our customers. On December 15, the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) and the Window Covering Safety Council (WCSC) are announcing today a voluntary recall to repair all Roman shades. To view this release click here.

What this recall means, is that anyone who purchased a Roman Shade from Payless Decor is eligible for a retro-kit to make his/her Roman Shades cordless and child-safe. Click here to access and order this kit.

If you have a young child and are considering a window treatment optiion, we strongly urge you to consider a cordless option.

9/16" Cellular Shades

3/8" Double Cellular Shades

1/2" Cordless Cellular Shades

3/4" Cordless Cellular Shades

3/4" Cordless Blackout Cellular Shades

Premium Roller Shades

However, if you do want a corded option, Payless Decor's products adhere to the latest safety regulations: All blinds have multiple cords standard (as opposed to loops) and cord cleats to tie the cords away from children. For blinds and shades with a cord-loop or continuous cord, we offer tension tie-down devices so that the cords can be pulled taut.

If you have any questions feel free to contact us so that we can help you choose the option that is right for you. And if you are a previous customer and have lost your cord cleat or tension device let us know so we can work to get you one.

The Payless Decor Team

Cellular Shades Save You Warmth and Money
By Rondale
10/8/2009 12:00:00 AM

Yes people…it’s that time of year again where the hot sun that pushed us to spend summer afternoons in our pools has turned away, ushering in the cool winds of the fall season. It’s that time of year where we fight off that cold draft seeping through our windows by cautiously raising the heat thermostat or cuddling under that warm blanket mom took the time to hand knit for us.

But what if there was an alternative to mom’s heartfelt creation to keep warm in these cool months to come. Especially living in an economy tainted by high-energy costs. If you’re looking for a contemporary product that can also be beneficial to your lifestyle, I would recommend our cellular shades.

Our cellular shades are custom crafted from a durable 100% non-woven polyester fabric using a single or double cell construction. What this does is act as an insulator blocking that cold air draft from entering your home. It also filters out UV rays which can damage interiors and upholstery. This will be beneficial in 4 primary ways:

  • It saves money through improved energy efficiency.
  • Protects interior furnishings.
  • Increases air circulation in your home.
  • With UV ray filtration, they can be used year round!

In addition to the many economic benefits, our cellular shades are just darn stylish! I love their contemporary design. It adds a sense of elegance to any room. Even when they are raised, they give a neat and compact appearance. They are offered in a number of color selections and are customizable from room darkening fabrics to ‘top down/bottom up’ options. So what are you waiting for? Take a look at our cellular shades today!

And don’t forget to take notice of our other great products. Our bamboo shades add a rustic look to any home décor and our verticals blinds are great for patio doors, narrow windows, and doorways. These and more great products are available in the ‘Product Guide’ section of our website.

Happy Shopping!

How to Restring Bamboo Shades
By fixitgirl
6/24/2009 8:40:00 AM

Although our bamboo shades are made to last a very long time without any repairs, sometimes things can happen and it may become necessary to restring one of your shades. If you should find your shade’s cord has broken, give us a call and one of our friendly Customer Support Specialists can assist you in obtaining some brand new cords. When you receive these here are a few simple steps that you can follow to put your window treatment back in working order:

Traditional Cords:

Check out this quick silent video to watch one of our experts:

1. Cut your cords the correct length. The correct length is the sum of three measurements. a) On the back of the shade the height from the bottom cord ring to the headrail, b) The measurement from the headrail to the middle of the shade (1/2 way), and c) the measurement in width from the cord track to the cord lock. Please note that for each column this measurement will be different. For example if your shade is 50" wide, there will be one column close to your cord lock and one or more columns farther from your cord locks.

2. Start with the longest cord at the front of your shade and pull your cord through the cord lock mechanism starting at in the innermost track on the underside of the mechanism, through the midle of the two cord lock pieces and then out towards the next pulley to the left or right of the cord mechanism. You will go through each pulley horizontally until you get to the last pulley (There may be one or two pulleys depending on the size of your shade).

Blind Lock

3. Once you are at the last pulley, pull it down towards the holes that are in the shade and lead to the outer side.

4. Pull the cord through towards the back side of the shade and lead it through the round guide rings in the same column.

Blind Pulleys

5. Knot the cord at the last guide ring on the bottom of the shade.

6. Repeat with the next cord. Place note that each cord will go in a different chamber within the cordstop mechanism. If there are only two cords, put the shortest cord in the outermost chamber and the longer cord in the back  or middle chamber.

7. Now that all of your cords are through and tied to the back of your shade. Ensure that in the front all the cords are even. Now put the cord-pulls on them

Continuous Cord Loop:

1. The cords must be tied at the rod and secured under the clip. The knot will hold the cords in place.
2. The cord then goes into the clip on the bottom of the plastic piece that holds the rod to the headrail. This way, the cord will be secured to the rod when it is rotated.
3. Next, the cords will go through the grommet to the back of the shade and continue down the guide rings on the back of the fabric.
4. The bottom of the cord then goes through the tassel and is tied off. Each of the knots can be re-adjusted to ensure the shade will raise evenly.

Make sure to take a look at your bamboo shade and its current cords prior to beginning this process. This will help you feel more familiar with the parts and assemblies so that these directions will make any restringing a snap.

Happy repairing,

Bamboo Blinds or Bamboo Shades: What is the Difference?
By admin
6/24/2009 8:28:00 AM

Many times customers and businesses use the terms blind and shade synonymously. So when it comes to a Bamboo window treatment, this mixing of verbiage can cause confusion. Even we use the term interchangeable ways since and actual shade is usually what customers are looking for even if they search for bamboo blinds. So what is the difference? A shade is usually a piece of fabric or in this case, woven wood (bamboo, grass, reed, fabric, etc) that is raised and lowered in either a roman style, or a roll-up style (the former being more elegant generally). A blind, however, indicates thee are slats that tilt open and closed, like venetian blinds, mini blinds, etc, there are slats, made solely or primarily with bamboo. These slats may have a woven look, or may look very similar to a basswood blind - depending on how they are manufactured. True bamboo window blinds are much more of a niche product, since they are usually a bit more expensive than bass wood blinds, yet look similar (although they are ‘greener’); whereas, bamboo shades are quite en vogue with designers right now, who often dress a window with a combination of a bamboo shade, and colorful drapery panel set.

Hopefully this helps explain the difference, but if you still have any questions, give us a call and we’d be happy to discuss with you in more detail!

Summer Window Coverings
By fixitgirl
6/18/2009 8:10:00 AM
Now that summer is just around the corner and you have finished the spring-cleaning, it is time to start redecorating your home. The best place to start is your windows! Not only do the type of window treatments that you choose influence the look and tone of the room, but also they will help keep out the hot summer rays.Payless Décor’s coolest looking (and feeling) blinds for summer would have to be our bamboo shades. I would have to recommend that you choose either a privacy or blackout liner to keep the temperature in the house down, but these shades are worth the investment. Despite what you may think, these shades will work with any décor from country rustic to sophisticated elegance. Our Premium, Designer, or Signature bamboo shade lines will offer you a choice of either a privacy or blackout liner that is permanently attached to the back of the bamboo (facing street side). By the way, they are attached using staples in the top of the headrail and then plastic anchors and fabric glue through the shade portion. The Signature line of bamboo now boasts a new movable liner that actually lowers and rises independently of the shade. This is a great option for those of you who love bamboo and your privacy!

My personal favorite, if you can swing it, would be to get the bamboo shades and then add a soft treatment around the outside of the shade. I LOVE this look and it is what I went for in my house. I inside mounted the unlined bamboo shades and added curtains on the outside. This way you still get the see-through light filtering of the bamboo, but you don’t have to compromise your privacy or room temp. So, check out the brand new drapery panels that we just got in. With all of the color choices in our bamboo and curtains, you should be able to come up with some amazing combinations that will finalize the best look in your room.

Of course, the old stand bys for summer are the cellular shades and the roller shades. The cell shades are a honeycomb design that reduces noise and heat. We just added a really cool cell shade in the Signature line that can be totally cordless and top down bottom up. It is the 3/8” Signature Double Cellular Shades. Safety meets functional privacy control with that feature.

Roller shades can be ordered as a solar screen, such as the Premium Roller shades Illumination Bronze. This way they are like sunglasses for your window-you can still see through them, but the light is tinted from being so bright. Or, you can get them as a blackout shade to maximize the efficiency of blocking out heat. And, similar to bamboo’s see through quality, you can also get some of the roller shades with an openness factor. For example, the Style 2000 has little holes to filter the light in. You can have the brightness of summer filtered in without even lifting your shade!

Roller Shades-Gaining Popularity in Spring 2009
By cherri
5/4/2009 8:17:00 AM

Roller Shades are one of the most recognizable types of window treatment around.  Even if you didn’t grow up with them in your own home, you were sure to see roller shades at Grand Mom’s house or your favorite Uncle and Aunt’s place.  And if you are a coffee lover, the Starbucks down the street is sure to have them.

There are Roller shades made with vinyl, fabric or laminate and their thickness varies depending on the purpose they are used for.  Insulating roller shades are thicker while those used strictly for privacy can be thinner.  Roller Shades come in a wide variety of styles, colors and textures and coordinates easily in any room.

Roller shades have become quite popular once again (Grand Mom would be pleased) as they offer an economical, simple yet aesthetically pleasing means to cover windows and doors.

Among the added benefit is that Roller Shades offer also economical window privacy. Roller shades can be ordered with an extra layer of blackout fabric, which will block out all light from a room, or simply use light filtering shades to keep excess light out.

Last, but not least, roller shades are easy to install.  In most cases, homeowners themselves install the roller shades, eliminating the added cost of professional installation.  Thus, it can be both elegant and affordable to get a discount roller shade and accentuate it with a nice drapery panel.

We recently added an economy roller shade line to our premium line of roller shades, and I would be happy to discuss what roller shade best fits your needs!

Cellular Shades and Insulating Your House
By admin
3/11/2009 8:31:00 AM

With home heating costs this season estimated to go through the roof, there are viable ways to maximize the energy efficiency of your home with the proper window coverings.

Hitting home for many families is the ever-increasing cost of energy.  If you live in a cold climate you are probably feeling the pinch of fuel costs even if they are a bit down from earlier in the year.  I lived in Pennsylvania for many years and I was acutely aware of this.  It seemed that every winter the prices just kept going up.

There are ways to dramatically improve the energy efficiency of your home and one of them is with the right types of window blinds and shades.  One of the best types of window treatments for insulation is cellular shades.  They come in single and double cells.  The double cell shades offer the greatest level of insulation both for hot and cold weather. However, both types of shades are specially designed to keep the heat in and the cold out.

The single and double-cell construction of cellular window shades not only provide the highest level of insulation, but also filter out harsh UV rays that can damage interiors and upholstery in your home.  In addition, if you get a blackout shade, insulation is generally increased further. Our cellular shades, also known as cell or honeycomb window shades are made from 100% woven polyester fabric for durability and offer many years of resilience against wear and tear.

Cellular shades can actually pay for themselves with the money saved in energy cost.  In today’s economy it’s definitely a wise economic decision.
