Taking advantage of natural lighting in your home

You might love your heavy drapes, opaque blinds and shades, but did you know that you may be keeping out beneficial natural lighting by leaving them closed throughout the day? Whether you own wood blinds or sheer curtains, it's in your best interest to allow as much sunlight as possible to flow through your windows on a regular basis - here's why.

Sunlight provides vitamin D.
It's no secret that you can get a healthy dose of vitamin D through the sun. Even if you eat plenty of nutritious foods and take supplements, getting this vitamin directly from the source can ensure you're actively working to maintain your overall well-being. If you don't spend time outdoors on a regular basis, allowing natural light to flow into your home can give you some of the sunlight you need.

Consider installing cellular shades or sheer blinds that can be easily adjusted during the day to permit natural light to enter your living spaces. When you want more privacy after the sun goes down, these discount window treatments can be closed quickly and efficiently.

Natural light reduces reliance on electricity.
If you're constantly worrying about your electric bill, TLC.com states that using natural light may be the perfect solution. Not only can you keep your living spaces illuminated, but you don't have to switch on the lamp to do so. Of course, there isn't much you can do about the issue when the sun goes down. However, switching your bulbs to LED and compressed fluorescent  lights can help you cut back your costs when natural light isn't available.

Sunlight can create warmth and comfort.
If you've been looking for a way to add a sense of coziness and warmth to your living spaces, natural light may be the answer. Sunlight can instantly brighten an area and make it feel more comfortable. Furthermore, it may even make certain areas in your room seem larger than they really are since more illumination can create the illusion of additional space.

Once you familiarize yourself with the benefits of sunlight, how do you incorporate more of it into your home? There are a few ways you can take advantage of natural light without going to too much trouble.

First, keep in mind that reflective surfaces can do wonders when it comes to illumination. Whether it's a mirror or a glossy table, reflective items can spread the sunlight throughout your space and instantly make it feel more welcoming.

Next, your window treatments might be playing a large role in how much natural light is entering your space on a regular basis. Try to steer clear of opaque, thick drapes and opt for sheer curtains or easy-to-control blinds. This can make it easier to take advantage of sunlight on a regular basis.

Finally, be mindful of furniture placement and the colors of your decor. Large pieces of furniture might be unintentionally be covering up your windows.

"Orient objects in the room to promote the flow of daylight," Matthew Tanteri, an assistant professor of lighting design at Parsons the New School for Design, told the New York Times. "So, things like bookshelves and partitions should be perpendicular to the window wall."

It's also a good idea to avoid dark furnishings and wall colors that can absorb all of the natural light and create a dreary feeling. Dark hues may also make your living spaces seem smaller than they actually are. By taking the previous tips into account, you can ensure your home is always full of natural light and maintain its cozy atmosphere.
