Just because you have trouble narrowing down your options when it comes to discount window treatments, furniture and wall paint doesn't mean you can't design a living space. In fact, this is a dilemma that many homeowners face, despite having a keen eye for everything from sofas to lamps.

Recently, professional interior designer and television personality Nate Berkus spoke out about his feelings on the matter in his new book, "The Things That Matter," according to The Canadian Press. Berkus, who is most renowned for his guest appearances on The Oprah Winfrey Show, has an extensive background in decorating and furnishing living spaces. Since the end of his own design television show, "The Nate Berkus Show," he's taken time to create a book for homeowners who are lost when it comes to cellular shades, dining room chairs and everything in between.

"We all want to live better," Berkus told the news source. "And the book is about the idea that our homes, most importantly, should tell the story of who we are, of who we aspire to be. That involves getting to know yourself fairly well and breaking a lot of rules and not listening to your loudest girlfriend or your mother-in-law. It's really forging your own way."

Another tidbit of advice that Berkus gave was to seek inspiration from what you wear on a daily basis. For example, if you tend to lean toward red clothing, this may be an indicator that red would work wonderfully in your living space and appeal to your tastes.

Decorating like a pro
Even if you aren't a professional interior designer like Berkus, you can still utilize discount window treatments, furnishings and wall decor like you're an expert. One secret trick you can utilize to your advantage is to use an ample amount of throw pillows, according to House Beautiful magazine. This can boost the comfort factor while creating a more calming environment in your room.

Another way you can decorate like a pro is by bringing in decorative accents with character. This doesn't mean going to a high-end store - you can find several intriguing pieces anywhere from thrift shops to flea markets. In the end, this tactic can help you save a few bucks as well.

Whether you're looking to revamp your dining room or bedroom, these key tips can help you create a new interior that inspires as well as wows you and your guests.
