Top 5 Ways to Make Your Bedroom More Romantic
By Payless Decor
2/11/2015 12:00:00 AM

If you’re planning a low-key, romantic evening in with your significant other this Valentine’s Day, these simple romantic tips for the bedroom will help you set the mood.

Candles

Create a soft, romantic glow with candles in your bedroom. Candles are an easy and inexpensive way to create a big impact on how your bedroom looks and feels. Place bigger pillar candlers on dressers and bedside tables to set the mood. They can also help your room smell pretty or sensual. Smaller tea light candles in glass votives look beautiful scattered around your bedroom. Remember to never leave candles unattended or lit while sleeping. For the same effect without the possible fire hazard, try wax LED candles. Made from real wax, these flameless candles have a battery-operated LED light that produces a dim flickering flame effect that will provide relaxing illumination in any area of your home.

Lighting

When was the last time you went to a romantic restaurant with bright flourescent lighting? Don't ruin a special evening under harsh, bright light. Installing a dimmer switch to control your lighting fixtures is the best way to accomplish dim mood lighting.  Low wattage bulbs create soft lighting and are very flattering.

Consider swapping out your practical ceiling fan for luxe lighting. The smaller, evenly spaced delicate bulbs of a glamorous chandelier disperse light softly through a room and add an extra boost of romance.

If you use energy-saving light bulbs, it will decrease your electricity bill and you'll have to change them less often.

Beds

From www.thebudgetdecorator.com

The most essential part of the bedroom is the bed. A good mattress and high quality linens are worth the money. Presidents' Day weekend offers great savings on new mattresses and furniture so it is the perfect time to buy a new bed and maybe some bedside tables too.

Canopy style beds or four-poster beds are the most romantic and sophisticated beds, but if you don't have one or can't buy a new bed, make your exisiting one more luxurious by adding a new duvet cover, pillow covers and soft throws.

Walls

From http://www.diynetwork.com

Change up your wall paint for a soothing and romantic master bedroom. Stick with neutral colors, as you can always add a splash of color or an animal print with accessories for a racy feel. Some prefer to use calm spa-like colors, like aquas and blue greens, taupes and warm beiges, and greys, especially those with a slight lavender tint. If you are going for passion, use red. According to their website, www.paintquality.com
, red is a powerful color that increases blood pressure and heart rate. Don't go with a dark color because anything too dark will make the room appear smaller.

Windows

Curtains and blinds are a great way to frame a room and create the perfect atmosphere where you need it most. Nothing kills the mood like blinding sun in your eyes. Choose blackout cellular shades or plush, dark curtains which add elegance while blocking out noise and light.

A combination of simple sheer and opaque draperies serve a dual purpose. The sheer fabric stays open during the day to allow light in. At night, the opaque panels help buffer sound and keep light out for a good night's sleep or a long romantic night.

Do you have any tips to add some romance to the bedroom this Valentine's Day? Let us know by leaving a comment.

Cozy Up For Christmas
By Payless Decor

Cozy Up for Christmas

When you think of the winter, you likely think of staying warm from the cold. Cozying up next to the fire, snuggling in a warm blanket and drinking hot chocolate with mini marshmallows. With predictions of another frigid winter, you can keep your home warm in both temperature and ambiance with a few simple additions. Read on to discover unique ways you can make your abode cozy this cold season.

One way to keep your home feeling toasty is to add a woodsy element. An easy way to achieve this is with wood window blinds. Not only do they provide elegance and warmth to cozy up a space, they also add a unique style to any room, especially a bedroom or living room. This look can be supplemented by hanging up heavy drapes for an even more decorative and inviting aura.

Since energy bills are usually higher in the winter months, you’ll definitely want to reduce your bill anyway you can. Blackout cellular shades are perfect for those who are more practical but still want sophistication. They protect against heat loss in winter. Windows are the source of the most wasted energy inside the home so these shades are a must. A bonus? They’re cordless, making for extremely easy opening and closing. Try to choose rich colors that evoke feelings of tranquility and safety. Colors like amber, espresso or vanilla will make you feel like you’re in winter oasis. Reds and yellows are also good choices— just be sure to stick to mellow tones of each.

If drapes or blinds aren’t for you, there are other options— shades or sliding panels, for instance, add a sophisticated and distinct vibe to your windows. This unexpected element can keep you warm both functionally and visually. Try Roman window shades, which combine fabric and the easily operated shades, for an elegant touch, or bamboo shades for a trendy touch. The latter will lie flat against the window and can then be rolled up to allow more light to shine through. They also bring the beauty of nature indoors with rich textures, beautiful colors and natural style.

Window decorations aren’t the only way to spruce up your home. Instead of having a cold, bare floor, think about placing rugs underneath coffee tables in neutral colors or ones that pop. One key to picking rugs— or any object used for decoration— is to pick ones with a color that doesn’t stimulate but makes you feel secure. That means a vibrant, lime green rug wouldn’t be the wisest choice for warm, wintery decor. Instead, look for colors in browns and maroon reds, like the drapes. A jute rug, braided in pattern and great for big spaces, lends to feelings of comfort and security. Additionally, these rugs are eco-friendly and can easily be cleaned from spills or melting snow.

In addition to using blankets and sweaters to stay warm this winter, a few key household accessories can really help provide that cozy, inviting feeling that everyone looks forward to when they visit family over the holidays.

Rest Well With Blackout Shades
By Payless Decor

Rest Well With Blackout Shades

Outside noise, stress from the day, temperature of the room and even what we ate before bed can all play a part in how well we sleep at night. The amount of light that comes in from outside can also stop us from getting the best sleep possible, whether it’s from a streetlight or the sun coming up a little earlier than you need to be awake. Blackout shades are a great way to block out unwanted light and noise, and they’re also a conservative way to reduce energy costs.

Blackout Ivory Roller Shades

Block Unwanted Light

If hung properly, blackout shades can block or filter almost all natural and unnatural light. They’re also thicker than typical shades or curtains, which allows them to block some of the noise from outside as well. Most people are capable of sleeping with varying degrees of light, but from a physiological standpoint, having as little light interference as possible results in a notably restful night.

Increase Rest Time

Exposure to light can decrease your melatonin levels. Melatonin naturally increases as the sun goes down, making you less alert and more able to fall asleep. Sunlight and artificial lighting can prevent the release of melatonin, making it harder to fall asleep and less likely that you’ll awake well-rested. Using blackout shades, in addition to ensuring all inside light sources are turned off, can keep melatonin at healthy levels throughout the night and into the morning until you’re ready to wake up.

Save Money

Not only will a reduction in light and noise help you sleep better at night, but using blackout shades can save you money as well. During the hot summer months, we put our air conditioners into overdrive to keep our homes nice and cool. The sun beating in through the windows works against the air conditioner and keeps rooms heated, which in turn keeps the air conditioner running longer and makes your power bill more expensive.

A similar thing happens in the winter, but with the opposite effect; during the coldest months, heat escaping through windows can account for 10 to 25 percent of your heating bill. Blackout shades will block the sun from entering the room in the summer, while also protecting the heat from seeping out cold windows in the winter. By using blackout shades, many people see a 15 to 25 percent decrease in their energy bills.

If you’ve been suffering from insomnia, not waking up feeling completely rested or just want to cut down on energy costs, installing blackout shades could be worth a shot. They’re also great for people with atypical work schedules. With all the options out there, it’s easier than ever to find nice blackout shades that are effective and also look great in any space. They are also a great option if you aren’t interested in hanging thick curtains around your house, and they’re equally as effective.

Four tips for creating the ultimate media room
By Payless Decor
8/20/2012 4:09:00 PM

If watching movies and TV shows is how you have fun and relax after a long day of work, chances are you'd like a space that provides all the essentials. A media room is a great choice for the whole family, but there are a few decorative tips to keep in mind.

1. Eliminate messy wires. With so many plugs, cables, cords and wires connecting your electronics, you might end up with a tangled mess that ruins the look of the space. Install them behind the walls if you can, or hide them behind furniture or in storage cabinets if possible.

2. Create optimal lighting. Nothing ruins a TV-watching session like the glare of sun on the screen. Roller shades for windows will make sure that you can see everything with no distractions.

3. Set up the perfect seating arrangement. It's important to ensure that everyone has a good view, so position your sofas and chairs in a way that's as functional as it is attractive. Each seat should be the best one in the house!

4. Keep drinks and snacks on hand. A mini fridge or a couple of shelves can ensure that munchies are always available. After all, who doesn't love eating popcorn and drinking soda during a movie?

Three ways to transform your sleeping experience
By Payless Decor
8/19/2012 4:00:00 PM

Many people consider sleeping one of their favorite activities, and why not? There's nothing better than the feeling of sinking into your pillow after a long day knowing that you'll be completely at peace for the next several hours. Unless, of course, you have trouble catching those Zs. If you're a tosser or a turner, here are three ways you can improve your sleeping experience.

1. Upgrade your window treatments. If you have blinds in place that somehow still manage to let rays of sunshine assault your eyes every morning, switching to blackout cellular shades can make all the difference, and they're easy to install. No more rising when the sun does!

2. Consider ear plugs. If you live on a busy street or sleep next to a partner who snores, a pair of earplugs is well worth a couple of bucks. Just make sure that your alarm is a loud one so you're not late to work in the morning.

3. Turn down the temperature. Sleep is more peaceful in a cool room, and you'll be able to snuggle up in your comfortable sheets and blankets. Adjust the thermostat or turn on a fan near your bed.
