WCMA updates window treatment standards to stress safety

If you're thinking about installing new discount window treatments in your home, you might want to familiarize yourself with the new standards set for shades and blinds. Doing so can give you peace of mind as you look for the perfect cellular shades or wood blinds for your living space.

The Window Covering Manufacturers Association (WCMA) recently announced that it has adjusted its window treatment standards to improve safety for consumers. Some of the specifics of the changes include further durability testing, new controlling cords that require fewer tension devices and additional warning labels.

"The window covering industry is committed to the ongoing innovation and improvement of our products to make them as safe as possible," said WCMA Executive Ralph Vasami. "In addition to the new standard, the WCMA and its member companies continue to work with the CPSC and others to implement a year-around national public education and information program to educate consumers about the safe use of window covering products."

This latest revision is the sixth that has been published since the WCMA first created its list of standards in 1996.

There are numerous benefits to installing blinds and shades in your home, in addition to using curtains and drapes. As TLC.com reports, shades can effectively keep your home more insulated and reduce your energy consumption throughout the year.

Blinds and shades are also window treatments you can use to easily manage how much natural light flows into your home. These days, there are many cordless options available to homeowners with pets and small children who make safety a top priority. Over time, the new WCMA standards will likely make it simpler for consumers to find reliable, durable window treatments that work for their living spaces.
