Five ways to make your kitchen more modern

Is your kitchen stuck in the 20th century? As one of the most-used rooms in the house, a kitchen's design should be indicative of the family that lives in it, and chances are yours didn't come straight out of the 60s, 70s or 80s. Not to mention, if you're planning to sell your house in the somewhat near future, you'll need a modern kitchen - it's one of the first things potential buyers look for! Here are several ways you can update your amenities.

1. Bring in stainless steel appliances. Gone are the days when white microwaves, refrigerators and dishwashers ruled, and especially the days when wackier colors were trendy, like pea green. (Eww.) Stainless steel is pretty much a must in a modern kitchen, so consider upgrading your fixtures to newer models. You'll get an aesthetic boost as well as appliances that are more energy efficient and effective! That's a win-win.

2. Upgrade your window treatments. If it's been years since you last updated your blinds and shades, it's past time to find new options. No matter how big or small your windows are, you can always find affordable custom window shades online - and hey, just surfing the net for your kitchen decor is so 21st century!

3. Nix the linoleum. Whether it's on your floors or your countertops, linoleum's got to go. Sure, tile and other modern materials may be pricier, but they're much more attractive, durable and functional. Consider granite for those countertops (it's cheaper in tile form) and terra cotta for your floors.

4. Redo the walls. If your kitchen has dated wallpaper or a paint color that's no longer en vogue, it's easy to change the look of your walls. A fresh coat of paint is not only cheap, but it'll probably only take you a weekend to do yourself. Neutrals are always fresh, but warm, bright colors like reds, yellows and oranges are attractive options for the kitchen.

5. Maximize prep space. If you find yourself struggling to lay out all of your cooking supplies and effectively prepare meals for your family, it sounds like your kitchen could use more counter space. Consider expanding the length of your counters or have an island installed in the center of the room. Ta-da! Modernity at its best.
