Spring is finally here and the flowers are blooming! Bring the garden inside by designing your space so that it can blossom year-round, thanks to floral fabrics, wall coverings, and furnishings.

Florals are a classic print that people just can't seem to get enough of. There's something cheerful, sophisticated and fun about flowers that makes us want to put them practically everywhere, but there are a few tricks for making them work right. Whether you're covering cellular shades with floral curtains or using printed throw pillows, here's how to do it without ending up like your Grandma Bessie's living room.

First, pay attention to the size of the prints you're looking at. In general, large designs work better in big rooms where they won't seem overwhelming, while small prints look best in tinier spaces where they won't get lost in the mix.

Keeping it simple and neutral is the key to layering floral print upholstery, floral rugs and floral artwork in the same space. Mix in a few simply upholstered chairs and wooden tables with bolder floral pieces.

House Beautiful

If you don't want to go “all out” with florals, use them as an accent, like on your pillows or artwork. You can also incorporate floral patterns into designs that feature deeper colors and rustic elements like wood and stone.

Floral sofas were big in the '60s and '70s, especially coastal decorating styles. If you love vintage prints, search online sites like Ebay and Etsy or head to a flea market to pick up something similar that's affordable and funky.

Don't be afraid to mix your prints. Feel free to experiment with stripes, polka dots or even zig zags when you're pairing your florals. As long as the scale, texture or colors are similar, they should work together.
