Five trends to try in your new apartment in 2013

If you're going to be moving into a new apartment to ring in 2013, you're likely on the hunt for discount window treatments, wall art and furnishings to decorate your living space. It can be exciting to relocate and have an apartment to spruce up, and there are plenty of new interior design trends to take advantage of as you do so.

Whether you want to use your landlord's permission to paint the walls or bring in exotic furniture, there's a style to suit your personal tastes and preferences. That being said, it's never too soon to start looking at new trends and scrapbooking ideas from interior design magazines. Here are some of the most popular up-and-coming styles that you might want to consider as you begin to plan out the decor in your apartment.

1. Royal purple.
ForYourHome.com reports that the Pantone color institute has deemed purple supreme heading into 2013, which many people might not find too surprising. This hue was seen everywhere from runways to showrooms in 2012 so it's no wonder that it's going to be a hit in the upcoming year! Consider looking for deep purple or violet drapes, seating or throw pillows to incorporate this hot hue into your interior design. To highlight its true beauty, install cellular shades that can allow natural light to bounce off the color and make it even more eye-pleasing.

2. Stripes.
If there's one pattern that continues to become more prominent, it's stripes, according to the Boston Globe. Love it or hate it, you're bound to see more stripes in everything from sofas to curtains. If you want to go bold and try this pattern, consider adding some stripes to your walls for a contemporary look in your apartment. Not daring enough? Opt for pillows or linens with stripes instead to ensure you capitalize on this trend in 2013.

3. Small details.
Southern Living magazine reports that it's especially important to focus on small details if you're going to be moving into an apartment in the new year. If you're working with a limited amount of space, bringing in oversized furnishings to make a statement is going to be out of the question. Incorporating small details into your curtains, linens and accent pieces can achieve the same goal without eating up too much space in your apartment. Whether you love the idea of lace or embroidery on pillows, there's no better time to showcase your tastes than 2013.

4. Floating shelves.
Who says you need to own a large house to display some of your most prized pieces of art? Paintings, sculptures and framed photos can instantly make an apartment feel like home sweet home, meaning there's no reason why you shouldn't show them off in your new space.

Better Homes and Gardens magazine recommends installing floating shelves to display your favorite pieces and truly make the apartment your own. Not only does this give visitors something to look at, but it can help you emphasize your true personal tastes. In addition, you'll also be giving yourself more storage for those hard-to-place items around your apartment.

5. Statement pieces.
If you're really looking to make a memorable impression on everyone who comes through your apartment, HouseBeautiful.com encourages you to implement a statement piece in to your living space. Doing so can work wonders in even the most bland apartment and anchor the rest of your interior design. Whether it's a vase or a bed frame, a bold piece can give you a starting point as you decorate the rest of your apartment as well.
