If you've been meaning to bring new pleated shades, furnishings and accent decor into your great room, there's no better time to start than now. However, it can be intimidating to revamp the entire interior design of a room if you've never done so before. That being said, there are a few common mistakes you should be mindful of going into your project. By acknowledging these issues, you can avoid them yourself.

1. Investing in recessed lighting.
While recessed lighting can create a sense of ambiance in a living space, Houzz.com reports that heavily relying on it is one of the biggest mistakes you can make as a designer. Instead, consider letting more natural light into the space with cellular shades or sheer curtains. This can make the great room feel warmer and brighter.

2. Buying paint before furniture.
DesignsMag.com states that another mistake you can potentially make while redesigning your space is selecting your new wall paint before your furnishings. By choosing your furniture beforehand, you can make it easier to find paint to match your chairs and tables during the decorating process.

3. Leaving pictures and paintings unframed.
The wall art in your space can set the tone for the entire design of your great room. AskMen.com recommends framing all of your posters, pictures and paintings to maintain a sense of elegance. Having numerous pieces of wall art without frames can eventually come off as downright tacky. Furthermore, you aren't doing the pieces much justice!

4. Crowding the room with oversized furniture.
If you're already working with a small great room, it's in your best interest to seek pieces that won't overwhelm the space. Try to take a minimalist approach when designing the room and searching for pieces of furniture for the space - sometimes less can be more. In addition, don't try to fit in oversized sofas, tables and loveseats simply because you don't want to go through the trouble of shopping for new ones. When revamping the entire interior of a room, starting with a clean slate can be beneficial.

5. Failing to incorporate personality.
Whether you're designing a great room or bedroom, remember to incorporate pieces that you truly enjoy to make the space comfortable and speak to your personal taste. In the end, you'll be happier with the finished product.
