Childproofing your discount window treatments and bedrooms

Discount window treatments are necessary in your home, but the fact of the matter is that they need to be utilized carefully when there is a child in the family. Young children can often find themselves entangled in the cords of blinds if you don't keep an eye on them. That being said, how do you incorporate items such as wood blinds into your little one's bedroom without posing a safety hazard?

Making window treatments safe around children
The Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents claims that a majority of accidental deaths involving window treatments cords happen in the bedroom. They tend to occur in kids between 16 months and 36 months old. One of the easiest solutions to this problem is to utilize cordless shades in rooms where children spend most of their time. These window solutions can provide the same amount of privacy and natural light control without creating a safety hazard.

Not into the idea of using this type of window treatment? Think about using curtains instead or another alternative without strings. If you choose to utilize discount window treatments with cords, the International Association for Child Safety recommends removing them as soon as you install them.

Child proofing a bedroom
Once your kid is old enough to crawl and walk, he or she is going to get his or her hands into everything, which can make it tough to childproof your home. However, there are a few ways you can keep your little one safe. First, Parents magazine recommends placing your child's bed against the wall to provide a protective barrier from falling out in the middle of the night. Next, store hazardous items above and away from your child, or lock them in a cabinet - this includes sharp objects. Finally, tie back any loose wires and cords around your house to prevent tripping and choking threats. On a similar note, you may want to purchase plugs for electrical sockets where tiny fingers can wander.

Whether you've recently moved into a new home or you simply feel like your house could be safer for your kids, these tips can be a great place to start. If you're still not sure where to begin, speak to other parents with young children. There's no better place fro parenting advice than other moms and dads who have gone through the same thing!
